Replacing a Failed Root Canal Tooth with a Dental Implant

Replacing a Failed Root Canal Tooth with a Dental Implant 1

A Kansas City Patient’s Story

When a tooth becomes infected or severely damaged, a root canal is often used to save it. However, some teeth cannot be restored long-term even after root canal treatment. This was the case for one of our Kansas City patients who came to Gordon Dental Implants & Cosmetics in Leawood, KS.

The Initial Problem

This patient had a front tooth that had previously undergone a root canal. Over time, the tooth became reinfection-prone, weakened, and eventually fractured. The break was significant enough that the tooth could not be rebuilt with a crown or bonding.

The patient was experiencing discomfort and a noticeable change in appearance, and more importantly, the tooth could no longer remain healthy and stable in place. After evaluation, the best option was to remove the failed tooth.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek care quickly. Early intervention can often save the implant.

Tooth Removal and Healing

The tooth was carefully extracted, and the site was allowed time to heal properly. This healing phase is important, it allows the bone and gum tissue to stabilize before placing a dental implant. In some cases, bone grafting is performed to preserve the ridge for future implant support.

Dental Implant Placement

Once the area healed, the patient returned to our office for single tooth dental implant placement. Using 3D CBCT imaging, we precisely planned the implant position to ensure ideal function, longevity, and esthetics.

The implant was then allowed to integrate with the bone – a natural healing process called osseointegration – which creates a strong, lasting foundation.

Custom Implant Crown and Final Result

The final step was placing a custom-shaded ceramic crown designed to match the surrounding teeth. The result is:

A tooth that looks natural

Feels like a real tooth

Functions normally for biting and chewing

Helps preserve bone structure and gum health

Today, the implant is stable, healthy, and performing beautifully.

Why a Dental Implant Was the Best Choice

Dental implants are often the best long-term replacement for a tooth that cannot be saved:

Why Patients Choose Implants

Permanent, non-removable

Preserves bone & facial support

No drilling on neighboring teeth

Benefits

Feels like a natural tooth

Prevents shifting or bite changes

Easy to care for brush & floss normally
