Prairie Village was established by famous 19th-century real estate developer J. C. Nichols in 1941, shortly after he successfully designed the famous Country Club Plaza based in Kansas City, Missouri. The new town was named after a local school built in the area during the early 1880s. Two years before its incorporation as a city in 1951, Prairie Village was named the best-planned in the United States.
